Combining laugh-out-loud humor with a slice of social history,
Laura Pedersen's Buffalo Gal:
A Memoir paints a vivid portrait of an era. Like many families
in Buffalo, NY during the 1970's energy crisis, the Pedersens feared
rising prices at the gas pump, argued about the thermostat, and
often slept in their clothes. While her parents were preoccupied
with surviving separation and stagflation, daughter Laura became
the neighborhood wild child, skipping school, playing poker, and
trading stocks. Learning how to beat the odds, Pedersen was well
prepared to seek her fortune on Wall Street, becoming the youngest
person to have a seat on the American Stock Exchange and a millionaire
by age 21.

Fulcrum Publishing to Distribute
through Consortium
Trade distribution effective as of January 1, 2009
Denver, Colorado (9/1/2008) For the first time in its 25-year
history, Fulcrum Publishing, an award-winning Colorado independent
publisher, will move to outside distribution and fulfillment.
As of January 1, 2009, Fulcrums US trade distribution, along
with distribution for its imprint, Speck Press, will be handled
by Consortium Book Sales and Distribution (CBSD). According to publisher
Sam Scinta, the move was prompted by the dynamic bookselling industry
and the opportunities presented by distribution. We obviously
live in a world where it is getting difficult not only for the independent
booksellers, but also for the big chains to spend time with every
publisher in the country, Scinta noted. Being a part
of Consortium will ensure that booksellers get to know all of our
great titles. Additionally, CBSD will provide excellent service
to these and other retailers. Scinta sees the move as a big
positive for Fulcrum. It will not only save us money on the
fulfillment end of our business, but will give us better and bigger
marketing and sales opportunities for our authors.
The selection of Consortium was an easy one for Fulcrum, according
to Scinta: President Julie Schaper along with her team bring
an amazing array of experience and knowledge to the table. They
will be a wonderful fit for our books and our company.
Associate publisher Derek Lawrence adds, We have seen a 20
percent increase in our net business over the last 12 months due
to internal changes and an invigorated approach to our frontlist.
The relationship with Consortium will help us continue to acquire
and promote the best possible books, secure in the knowledge that
our sales efforts are in the best possible hands. Fulcrum
has an active backlist of over 450 titles and publishes approximately
40 new titles a year.
